DL & Matilda Form Partnership
In June 2016, DL returns to Greater Accra, Ghana to pilot a tie-dye fashion project with Matilda over a period of seven-months. After establishing a project collaboration, they start designing their first collection of tie-dye clothes: “Ruby Is Respectful.” Matilda undergoes a two-week apprenticeship to learn traditional tie-dye and batik techniques from a local master in cloth-dying and produces the first prototypes. DL traces the materials to analyze their sustainability. After determining that most of the cotton available locally is non-organic and largely imported from undisclosed locations, DL explores importing organic cotton.
